Step by step: Ceviche Ingredients for beginners

Ceviche is one of the most iconic dishes in Peruvian cuisine. Fresh, flavorful, and rich in history, this dish has won over taste buds around the world. But what are the ingredients of ceviche? If you’re a beginner and want to prepare authentic ceviche at home, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the essential ingredients, focusing mainly on fish ceviche, and how you can adapt it to your personal tastes.

Fish ceviche is the most traditional and appreciated version in Peru. However, there are popular variations like squid ceviche, mixed ceviche (which combines seafood and fish), or scallop ceviche. All these versions share a similar preparation base but use specific ingredients depending on the type of seafood or fish you prefer.

Ingredients for Fish Ceviche

If you’re looking to prepare a delicious fish ceviche for two people, here are the basic ingredients you won’t want to miss:

  • 200 g of fresh fish (preferably white fish like sea bass, mahi-mahi, or snapper)
  • 5 limes
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 limo chili or rocoto (adjust the amount based on your preferred level of spiciness)
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped cilantro
  • Salt to taste (about 1/2 teaspoon)
  • Black pepper (optional)
  • 1 cooked sweet potato, sliced (a typical side for Peruvian ceviche)
  • 1/2 cup of boiled corn kernels (another traditional side for Peruvian ceviche)
  • Lettuce leaves (for presentation)

Optional Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of grated ginger (adds an extra touch of freshness)
  • 1 celery stalk to macerate with the lime juice and enhance the ceviche’s flavor.

How to prepare fish ceviche

  1. Cut the fish: Start by cutting the fish into medium cubes (about 2 cm). Make sure it’s as fresh as possible, as this is the main ingredient of ceviche.
  2. Macerate the fish in lime juice: Place the fish in a bowl and squeeze the limes over it. Let it marinate for 5 minutes. Remember, marination time is key to achieving the perfect ceviche texture.
  3. Add the other ingredients: Add the red onion, limo chili or rocoto (depending on your heat preference), a pinch of salt and pepper, and gently mix everything.
  4. Incorporate the fresh cilantro: Add the chopped cilantro to give it that signature refreshing touch.
  5. Serve with sides: Traditional ceviche is served with slices of cooked sweet potato, boiled corn kernels, and lettuce leaves.
